Class Conchylia, Order Pholades. Shell oblong-oval, the valves thin yet sculptured throughout with concentric furrows intersected by longitudinal ribs; anterior extremity beaked, posterior attenuate. Common on the littoral of the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, and formerly esteemed a delicate viand in southern Europe.
