Turritella Terebra

In every tapered spiral the sea keeps count of its own breaths; Turritella rolls them into a slender spire reaching for the moonlit tide.

Of the Order Gastropodes, Famil. Turritellidæ. Shell elongated, conical, attaining near six French pouces, composed of thirty or more closely imbricated whorls diminishing to an acute summit.  Found plentiful upon sandy or argillaceous bottoms of the Indian and Pacific Seas, where it burrows with a slow yet indefatigable motion, subsisting on the minutest algæ.
